About Ray Mercado
Mountain biking has been part of my life since 1991. It all started my first year of college when I went for what was supposed to be an “easy” ride w/ a few members of the Penn State Mountain Biking Team. Little did I know that we were going to ride some of the most technical singletrack that I had ever seen. Despite bonking, flatting, and dehydrating, I was still curiously interested in this sport that had just punished me. Still recovering a few weeks later, I decided to go shopping for a new bike and helmet. I was now hooked on mountain biking.
The next year, I transferred to Towson State University. I was happy to find many challenging local trail systems, but disappointed to learn that the University did not have a team. Later that year I founded and started the TSU Mountain Biking Club. This led to my introduction to mountain bike racing since we were a University funded club. I raced for Towson State for three years until I graduated. Afterwards, I coached the club and kept on racing. In 1998, I submitted my racing resume to DEAN Bicycles, and to my surprise, I had been accepted on their grass-roots racing team. I have been racing for them ever since and I hope to have a few more years left in my legs before I concede to the younger competition.
Mountain biking plays such an important role in my life today. I have always made time for the sport and I am certain it will be in my future. I see the positive effects it has on me as well as others. I am here to share my knowledge and experiences of mountain biking. I thank you for this opportunity and I look forward to the time we are going to spend together.
